Nicholas Nickleby's father dies unexpectedly after losing all of his money in a poor investment. Mr Ralph Nickleby's first visit to his poor relations Dickens began writing Nickleby while still working on Oliver Twist. The story first appeared in monthly parts, after which it was issued in one volume. The character of Nickleby is a young man who must support his mother and sister after his father dies.
